Flint Journal, 1941: Golden Wedding at Gaines — Mr. & Mrs. E. B. Van Auken will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Wednesday with an open house in their home from 2 to 5 p.m. Mr. Van Auken was born in Shiawassee County, the son of Mr. & Mrs. Edwin Van Auken, March 10, 1863, and his bride of a half century, the former Phoebe Reed, was born in Genesee County, August 26, 1874. During his earlier life, Mr. Van Auken served Gaines Township as supervisor for three years, was treasurer for two years and a member of the board of review for two years. He was justice of the peace for 16 years and a member of the school board of District 2, now the Yerkes School, for 17 years. He also served three years on the school board of District 9, now the Gaines High School. Mr. & Mrs. Van Auken are members of the Methodist church. Mr. Van Auken has been a member of the Byron Lodge, 80 F. & A. M. for 36 years, also the Eastern Star of Byron and a life member of the Durand Chapter 139. Mr. & Mrs. Van Auken resided on a farm during their early married life, in Vernon Township, and in 1894, they moved to a farm on the Baldwin Road in Gaines Township. In 1917, they moved to the village of Gaines, their present home. They have two sons, L. C. and Clifford; one daughter, Mrs. Dewey Shepard, all of Gaines and 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Another son, Howard is deceased. (photo)
